the future of reading is digital

Digitization experts from Europe meet in Umeå

From the 26th to 27th May 2011, about 80 specialists of digitization and e-collections participate in the international conference “Creating and Communicating Digital Content”, organized by the Umeå University Library.

The aim of the conference is to share experiences in organizing digitization workflows, presented by highly recognized speakers with up-to-date presentations.

The program includes introducing an enlarging eBooks on Demand (EOD) network, which held its annual meeting right before the conference also in the Umeå University Library. In order to find the books for digitization on demand, a common search engine has recently been set up in the EOD network and has already become popular among the users. The next developments include integrating the service with social network platforms.

Other intriguing topics are related to mass digitization. “Norway gave us yesterday a good example - what a library can do if there are no financial restrictions,” said Mats Danielsson, Head of Research Archives from the Umeå University Library. He also pointed out presentations about public-private partnership, IMPACT project for improving text recognition by search engines and other matters.

The Umeå University Library is a member of the EOD network since 2010. All in all 30 libraries from 12 European countries belong to the network and offer e-books on demand from public domain books in their collections.
