Národní technická knihovna (National Technical Library, NTL) in Prague , previously named Státní technická knihovna (The State Technical Library) were founded in 1718 as a collection of books of the first professional Professor of engineering Christian Willenberg (1655-1731). Part of its historical collection comes from this time. Contemporary National Technical Library has foundation charter from 1th february 1991.
The NTL is the central professional library under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Czech Republic. It provides library and information services to legal and physical persons, especially those in higher education, research and development. NTL is also a public library dedicated to science and technology, as such it collects and administers state-funded collections of Czech and foreign literature and other information resources and sources pertaining to technology and applied natural and social sciences associated with technology.
STL Collections contain over 1.2 million volumes - books, journals, newspapers, scholarly studies, trade information, electronic documents and other publications and texts from the field of technology and applied natural and technology-related social sciences. Historical collection (books and journals from 1500 to 1920) contains 22 965 volumes.
NTL is the host of the Czech National ISSN Centre (ČNS ISSN), which assigns ISSN numbers and registers serial publications published on the territory of the Czech Republic.
NTL is centre of digital document delivery system – the Virtual Polytechnic Library working on the basis of multifunctional centre of information services together with co-operative development of decentralized collection of periodicals specialized by subject and document type. The system has special union catalog of collection 44 Czech libraries and makes possible ordering for registration users from the Czech Republic.
The annual acquisition is about 10,000 volumes. The library staff of 160 is serving 5 600 registered users (about 60% of them are students).
Part of collection was digitalisated – Czech historical journals, textbook for students od technical universities. NTL is solving workplace for project The Digital Library for Grey Literature –Functional Model and Pilot Implementation.
NTL cooperates with other libraries and institutions especially in this topic – shared cataloguing, Union catalogue Czech Republic, shared building Czech authority files, cooperative association for the purchase of electronic information resources for selected Czech libraries (Science Direct, Springer Link, InterScience, Kluwer, more than 70 members institutions).
9.9.2009 NTL was opened up new library building, the largest and the most modern library building in the Czech Republic.

National Technical Library Catalogue The Catalog of the National Technical Library contents the records of all type of documents in one database. There are records of books, including e-books, journals, articles of Czech proceedings and journals, theses and prospectuses. The catalog includes also records of the historical collection NTL, books and journals publishing from 1500 to 1913. Every type of document is marked by icon. All collection of NTL is accessed to registered costumers, for Czech and foreing libraries by interlibrary loan service. NTL offers service digitalisation on demand - for book are published to 1909 - service E-book on demand and copies of articals - service the Virtual Polytechnical Library (the cooperation system for 50 Czech libraries). |
